Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
In Shellharbour, a homeowner encountered a severe and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, which are situated at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This water intrusion led to significant damage to the flooring, contributed to rising damp issues, and promoted mould growth, jeopardising recent renovations.

How Can You Identify the Source of Water Intrusion?
The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water that flowed downhill from the back and side yards of the neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system in place to intercept this flow, the water was compelled to travel beneath the house.
Establishing an Efficient Drainage System
CS Plumbing designed and implemented a gravity-fed French drain system specifically to capture and redirect water before it could reach the home’s foundation.
The project comprised several key components:
- A French drain system meticulously crafted to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, channeling it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the kerb, featuring strategically drilled holes to ensure optimal water discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller versions, seamlessly connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the kerb.
- A robust retaining wall system constructed along the property boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to form a strong barrier against the adjacent yard.
- Efficient on-site soil removal conducted with a dumper to streamline site management.
What Advantages Does Efficient Water Management Offer?
The newly established drainage system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. The homeowner has achieved a durable, low-maintenance solution that safeguards their foundation, flooring, and investment in renovations.
